The author argues that there are serious issues of contention between Modern Science and Islam, ranging from conceptual bases (‘methodological naturalism’) to the challenging worldview that has emerged from Science (e.g. Evolution and Big-bang/Multiverse Cosmology), and issues of application of science (genetic engineering, beginning and end of life issues, abuse of nature and the environment, etc.). This important paper charts some of the critical questions that need to be grappled with by Muslim theologians and which can no longer be postponed, let alone ignored.
Professor Nidhal Guessoum is an Algerian Astrophysicist who received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California at San Diego and spent two years as a researcher at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
