Delegates at the World Council of Church’s Reference Group meeting

[Abu Dhabi, UAE] Sohail Nakhooda, Head of Research and Publishing at Kalam Research & Media, and a specialist in Muslim-Christian relations was invited as one of the non-Christian delegates at the World Council of Church’s Reference Group meeting at the Ecumenical Centre in Bossey, Switzerland, on 22-26 February 2015.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) is a fellowship of over 300 churches representing over 600 million people Protestant and Eastern Orthodox Christians around the world. In its 2013 assembly in Busan the WCC called Christians and the world to join in a pilgrimage of justice and peace: The WCC stated in its declaration “Challenged by our experiences in Busan, we call all people – young and old, women and men, differently abled, people of different faiths – to engage their God-given gifts in transforming actions, together. We call first of all on the member churches and partners to walk together in a common quest, renewing our vocation of the church through collaborative engagement with the most important issues of justice and peace, healing a world filled with conflict, injustice and pain.”

The Council’s engagement in the pilgrimage of justice and peace express themselves through a 7-year programmatic work that aims to combine community-based initiatives and national and international advocacy for Just Peace, focusing on life-affirming economies, climate change, nonviolent peace-building and reconciliation.

At the meeting Sohail Nakhooda discussed with the WCC ways in which collaboration between Muslims and Christians could be enhanced at the local, national and international levels, and also how obstacles to understanding could be overcome by the two communities.
